Pym is the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne. When her mother was presumed dead in a mission as the original Wasp, Hank became distant and was never able to tell her what really happened. This made Hope bitter towards him, even legally changing her name to Hope van Dyne, and when she became a senior member of Pym Technologies, she voted him out of the company, so Darren Cross could take over. This turned out to be a grave mistake, as Cross wanted to recreate the Pym Particles through use of the Yellow Jacket suit which would be militarized and sold to Hydra. She was forced to work with Pym to train Scott Lang in stealing the technology back as Ant-Man.
During their training, van Dyne and Lang slowly bonded, which turned into an unexpected romance between the two.
Pym and van Dyne also worked things out, with the former introducing a new version of the Wasp suit, allowing her to become a superhero known as "the Wasp."
One night, Hope's parents had to leave on a "business trip", but was really a S.H.I.E.L.D. assignment to stop a Soviet missile from impacting into the United States. Hope didn't want them to leave, but Janet acted like it would be really boring, acting like she was falling asleep just thinking about it, which cheered her daughter up. They said their goodbyes and left Hope with her nanny, Rose.
As the Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hank and Janet tried to disable the missile, but Janet had to go into Quantum Realm to shut it down. Her final request was to tell their daughter that she loved her. Hank returned to Hope, alone, as she realized that her mother had died.
